On July 15, Time Magazine published an article criticizing Love Island contestant Chelley, whose real name is Michelle Bissainthe, sparking backlash from fans who called the coverage racially biased.
The controversy centers around a disagreement between Chelley and fellow castmate Huda Mustafa during the show’s popular “heart rate” challenge. Chelley felt Huda Mustafa took the challenge too far and was visibly upset afterward. When Huda later approached her to discuss the incident, Chelley—still emotional—suggested they talk the following day instead.
Many fans viewed Chelley’s response as thoughtful and mature, highlighting the importance of resolving conflict with a clear head rather than reacting in the heat of the moment.
However, Time criticized her behavior, prompting accusations of double standards and unfair treatment of Black contestants, who, viewers say, face disproportionately harsher scrutiny than their lighter-skinned peers.
Adding to the controversy, the publication initially misquoted Chelley in the article. Although the quote was later corrected, the piece remains live on Time’s website and social media channels, despite thousands of comments urging its removal.
